Sorry fellas for resurrecting an old thread but it was here so I think it was the right thing to do.

I'm currently operating 12.04 (Unity3D) as my first Linux desktop. I am naturally curious about the other desktop environments and have logged into the KDE Plasma Desktop and Gnome from my Ubuntu Installation.

Question:

Is the KDE Plasma Desktop that is built in the real thing? Can I use it and really sink my teeth into it and stay on it if I so choose or is it just meant for play considering I'm on Ubuntu?

I've split your post into a new thread: a lot can happen in the two years.
