both software manager and synaptic manager not opening
receiving the error


E: Type 'ain' is not known on line 3 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/n-muench-vlc-oneiric.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

You have a mistake in your sources list. How you fix this can depend on the Package Manager(s) that you use.

To go straight to the sources list, open a Terminal and issue the command:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.listLook at line 3. You can disable the whole line by putting a # at the beginning of the line or you can edit/correct it.

If you are in any doubt copy and paste your whole sources list here so we can have a look.

If you are having any trouble use this line of code in a terminal.


gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/n-muench-vlc-oneiric.listPut the # (comment sign) in front of offending line hit save as instructed in previous post.

Delete only the 'ain' part right at the end, and save.
logout and back in again, then run update manager again.

Should fix your problem.
