I want my workplace switching (next desktop) to be ctrl+down/up arrow instead of ctrl+alt+down/up. I've tried changing it with the keyboard system settings, but it doesn't change. I can't find any conflicts. Anyone have any ideas?

Whoops! miss-read what you had typed. I assume you're using Unity?

No Unity. Installed Gnome-session, so it's basically standard Gnome3.

Have you updated to Gnome 3.4? Because I got the same problem after updating to 3.4. Which is hardly surprising, given the explicit warning in the PPA description. ;)
Various keyboard shortcuts have stopped working, most of those are using Mod4. The other shortcut that stopped working is using the ThinkVantage key (Launch1) to open a terminal.
Changing the shortcut for moving to a workspace (left|right|above|below) has stopped working alltogether, default persists.
