Middle click happens multiple times

Hello all,
a problem that started in the last week or so: on one of my computers the middle button (which is actually the wheel button) registers 2 or 3 times each time I click it. It makes traditional copy/paste impossible, opens too many windows in Firefox, etc...

xev confirms the multiple actions. No problem with the other buttons.

Any idea ?

Hardware failure? Have you tried a different mouse, or the same mouse on a different machine?

The mouse works fine on another linux (Red Hat) computer. The problem started right after an Ubuntu update.
