It's about installing GNOME Fallback.

To install GNOME Shell:

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
To install KDE:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

After installing them, you then select them from the cog icon near where you type in your password when logging in. :)

The first post was in March. 11.10 was current then. Also, some people install from CDs that come with magazines to avoid the ~700 MB download which can be a big deal in some parts of the world.

I didn't move to Linux until I went for an "unlimited" internet plan ;)

Maybe the OP has some bandwidth (or internet quality) constraints?

Moved to Desktop Environments

For xfce it is xfce4. Lxde is lxde as far as I know. Synaptics or Soft Centre.
