Is it possible? I know it's a dumb question but one might assume that all the files get copied to the RAM before the drive gets formatted. I'm asking because I'm trying several Linux builds and I'm using Win7 so it's easy to go back and format the flash memory that I'm installing from and onto.

Yes, you can install ubuntu (and any linux) to an internal drive as well as a read/write external drive, for example a USB drive. There are several threads about that in the Ubuntu Forums. Do you want a it to look as a normal install (except that it is installed on an external drive)?

I don't think you understood me. I mean, is it possible to install it from the flash memory to the flash memory itself?

I see, and I have never done that. But you can install from one USB drive to another USB drive or a USB drive to a flash card.

You can even have an iso file on your internal HDD and install from that to the flash drive. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11227153&postcount=349 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11227153&postcount=349)
