I am running 11.10 and wanted to try Pantheon shell as a desktop environment so I found this

http://askubuntu.com/questions/66757/how-do-i-install-the-pantheon-desktop-environment

If I install it as a desktop environment I will still be able to use Unity as my primary environment right? So I don't understand what is the big deal about installing it even though it's not stable. Can't I just not use it and my other desktop environments should still be working normally right?

From what I understand, it is still under development and it will probably have many bugs. It is possible to lose data if you open files with it and it is possible that it will mess with other programs settings. The danger of real damage is low probability, I would ignore it myself, but it is worth noting nevertheless.
