I currently am running GNOME Classic, and have installed GNOME 3 (pretty sure), but when I select GNOME 3 in the login screen, I get the following (note the the glitches in the title bar):

Is this a driver issue? My screen is fine in both Unity and GNOME Classic. What's the fix? I'm running the most up-to-date ATI driver (proprietary) for Ubuntu.

Ok, so I now can render that screen properly. Turned out that it was indeed a ATI driver issue. The native Ubuntu driver works just fine. Now if I try to use Unity, I get some issues. All I get is File|etc.|etc.|etc., no normal Unity desktop! Not that I use Unity much, but is there a reason why it's not easy to just choose a desktop and have it work?
