Hi,
I have an old desktop PC with an Intel Q45 Express chipset available which I'm currently using as a secondary entry level PC (internet, music,...) but mainly for storage (2 Western Digital Caviar Green 1,5TB in a RAID 1 array).

At the moment it contains Windows 7 installed on the RAID 1 array using the integrated RAID controller.
The performance of the system is poor. My assumption is that this is mainly related to the fact that the operating system itself is also installed on the RAID 1 array as well.

So my idea was to buy a cheap SSD and use this for the operating system.
However, I've seen that even a small SSD costs about 50€.

I also have a 16GB USB 3.0 around.
So my idea was to install the operating system on this USB stick.
However, 16GB is too small for Windows 7.
Additionally the flash based USB stick will wear out.

So my idea is to install Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (AMD64) on a 16GB USB 3.0 stick persistently and use this as the operating system.
Additionally I want to use two Western Digital Caviar Green harddisks in RAID 1 with the integrated RAID controller for storage.

Will this work?
Is it a good idea?

Thanks!
