1) You should be able to view them(if they do NOT contain any DRM) with MPlayer or VLC, IF you've also installed the w32codecs(you can't find these in an official repo).

2)Mencoder is probably a pretty good converter, but it doesn't come with a gui and its command line options are plenty and thus pretty hard. All GUI's for it are still pretty buggy.(Basically i just use a Windows program untill somebody makes a good gui for it).

I read your previous related thread, and was wondering, have you tried going back to the regular nv driver? Or even to vesa? Just to see if it is the proprietary driver causing the problem or something.
Have you run an automated script to install all the extra codecs? Maybe you need some gstreamer extention too or something.
BUMPs is a really good multimedia script, you should try that if you haven't, then if it doesn't work you could try nv or vesa
