way to increase teh distance the window resize arrows are active?

I am having a really hard time resizing windows. It seems that the resize arrows only appear for a very short distance (only a few pixles)
It's so short I have a hard time using the trackpad to resize something.

Is there a way to increase the number of pixles that the resize arrows are available?

I am using Gnome Classic with compiz if it matters.
