View Full Version : [ubuntu] Advice for calendar solution for weirdo?

This is a bigger-than-Ubuntu question - it is a calendar management/google calendar publishing and even Apple iCal calendar question. I totally understand if I get no replies but figure I will try.

The problem: I am an anti-google privacy weirdo who has to use a google account and calendar at work. So i have two google calendars under that account, that I use to keep track of work (shared) and personal (private) appts. Being a google refusnik, I do not like having to allow google to set cookies and then logging in just to see a personal calendar. (I generally keep cookies etc. blocked from google on my non-work machines.)

But I'd like to be able to sync and see my calendar on all my devices/platforms: netbook running Natty with Unity, Mac running OSX, and iPod. I need a calendar! Having three occasional-use, incomplete, unsynced electronic ones and one paper one equals lots of appts. missed... I am willing to use Evolution, iCal, whatever, on the different platforms, as long as they sync with my existing google calendars, and can be used as just calendars (not "complete contact management suites" or whatever you call 'em.)

I have a little server space through my ISP, so i guess I could host something myself -- I suspect this is the best bet for me, given my anti-google privacy concerns, etc. But since I am very much at the low end of the calendar learning curve (am old), I would appreciate something that has good support and info resources. I've always configured these kinds of things the hard way since I am so ornery and picky, and I am willing to bite the bullet and spend some time doing this and figuring it all out -- but would prefer to only have to set it all up once.

Any suggestions for where to start? Will anything that uses the iCalendar format (i.e. http://trac.calendarserver.org/) work? Or something like this: http://www.davical.org/ ? Just looking for some friendly direction as to where to start. Thanks!

replying to my own thread, for future users like me who find this -- it appears that this link http://www.tom-reitz.com/2010/12/07/calendar-syncing-with-iphone-and-mozilla-sunbird-or-thunderbird-lightning/ may address just what I need. Not marking "solved" yet but hopefully, soon.

carbon512: If you use Firefox then the ReminderFox (http://www.reminderfox.org/) add-on may do what you want.

Can I share events with Google Calendar? (http://www.reminderfox.org/documentation-user-guide-sharing-reminders/#r9)
In a limited fashion, yes. It is possible to view events from your Google Calendar in ReminderFox, but it is not possible for you to add events in ReminderFox and have them appear in your Google Calendar. In this scenario, all events must be added using Google Calendar, and ReminderFox will act as a ‘Viewer’ of these events.
