This week its been quietly announced that members of the hacker group known as Anonymous are releasing their very own desktop operating system. This system is known at the moment as Anonymous-OS and is currently in as infant a stage as it possibly could be at version 0.1. That’s pre-pre-Alpha, for those of you counting, and we’re not even going to tell you to download it or do a search for it – keep your eyes off of it!

Is it just me or will you not trust a distro coming from the likes of Anonymous :lolflag:

My feelings are to stay far away!

It'll just be a bog standard distro with a cool looking anonymous hacking theme. Nothing new here folks. Move along now.

Possibly but my guess is it will be based on a bigger distro (Ubuntu or Debian?) (as most are), but be equipped with lots of security and intrusion tools like DEFT or nUbuntu. Obviously it will be themed as in the style of V for Vendetta. I doubt it will run any maleware by default and could be popular in certain circles – Direct Action groups, Anarchists etc.

hacker group known as Anonymous

Isn't 'hacker group' a rather grand term for a bunch of folk using DoS attacks?

... at this time I don't even think this worthy of Other OS... and I would strongly urge anyone that decides to install this to be very careful.

I would imagine the Anonymous distro probably contains a similar suite of tools to Backtrack and other pentesting distros.

It will not be long before someone gets a copy of it and reverse engineers it and confirms that it is nothing more than a distro with an evocative or even provocative name.

My assumption is that it will be open source and will be released under the appropriate license, therefore there would be little point in trying to do anything malicious while designing it as this would simply discredit the creators.

Oh look! A storm in a teacup on top of a mountain sized mole hill.

They are just trying to give themselves some credibility. Nice try you FAIL. This will just be used by teenage script kiddies trying to look cool in front of their mates.

I won't install it myself but it just seems like Ubuntu + lot of 'hacker' tools and mate desktop. Despite that I agree with your 'better safe than sorry' standpoint :p

I have to admit, I do like the wallpaper and theme..that's about it though.

When I heard about this, I automatically assumed either they included some backdoor/trojan or somebody like government/s wanted to 'track' anon supporters or discredit the group.

I am so sick of hearing about this group and it's "sister" groups, spin-off groups and anything to do with them.
I am also sick of seeing those stupid anonymous masks everywhere.

To me, this group of "hacktivists" biggest claim to fame has been hacking the Playstation Network which actually caused a lot of inconvenience to millions of innocent Playstation Network users.

Why don't these people put their talents to more constructive uses?

I'd trust this more than windows or os x

A lot of what these groups do seems well, inconvenience, irrelevant, and extreme sometimes, But on occasion they do good things like take down kiddy porn sites.

Anonymous, on their anonops twitter account, said that the Anonymous OS is fake and full of trojans. See? Even Anonymous doesn't trust it! :p

Humans rarely set out to be "bad". But they are generally selfish and inconsiderate. So, when they engage in their selfishness they often build a fiction that what they are doing is good. Sometimes some of the things they do ARE good, which reinforces the fiction. (Sometimes those fictions last for decades, until the people you have killed start showing up to keep you awake all night...)

Many who become "activists" are little more than rebels without a clue. Restless souls who rebel simply to be rebellious.

This is a GENERAL statement and is not in any way intended to desparage the very good things that many activists do, even if some of that is uncomfortable to the rest of us. Discomfort is often a great motivator to the lazy.

I have mixed feelings about Anonymous. Although I am frustrated by breaches of national security (not just the US), there is also something to be said for exposing government agencies and corporations in the act of dishonesty, deceit and exploitation.

Great link, philinux.

"education purposes to checking the security of web pages"

That's clearly from the group of Anonymous that does not speak English natively. Sounds somewhat like the things you watch out for in spam.

"While I didn't find any evidence of trojans or rootkits while traipsing through its internals (and WireShark records of its network traffic), it's probably most useful as a snapshot of what overeager Anon wannabes would run on the USB stick they keep hidden under their pillow."

Lame hacker tool or trojan delivery device? Hands on with Anonymous-OS

No way I'd run this, coming from the same group with members ready, willing, and able to sell each other "up the river". There was one guy who recently claimed to have hacked into all the upper-level Anon member cell phones and gotten copies of their contact and text messages, and other data.

I wonder what the phrase "upper level anon" means in relations to an organization that has no structure or official membership. People just do whatever the hell they want and stamp the name onto it to seem cool. The entire thing is silly. If you're over 14 and think anonymous is cool, you're pretty lame.

I know, the Anonymous OS. It's little bit like Backtrack but I think Anonymous OS didn't have trojans because Linux is a safe system, right? But if you afraid, try Backtrack.

From SourceForge-thread

Within the past 24 hours there have been several reports that Anonymous-OS is fake. Anonymous has no leaders and no official releases. Each individual can decide their own involvement and make decisions independently. Our only objective should be to provide one another with the resources to do so. We shouldn’t make accusations without providing evidence. We must not allow our distrust to cripple our movement. There are reports that the operating system is fake and other reports that indicate the operating system is functional. Additional research is being done to find any malicious software or back doors. Wait for the reports supported by evidence or do some research yourself but stop spreading the sickness of doubt. With that said, the majority of anons have found no reason to vilify this project but we would not install the operating system ourselves nor recommend others to do so.

Seems either fake or the act of a loner. Yeah yeah, decentralized collective and all that, I doubt a full and "sanctioned" Linux-distro would happen overnight for Anonymous without at least a couple of people knowing about it.

That said, it could be cool if they made one that offered something more than Backtrack does, not that I expect them to.

If you need more than Backtrack can offer then you really need to start thinking about releasing your own distro :P

Just be sure to give it a good sensible name though, like Zarathustra OS, and not a silly one like AnonymousOS!!!!!:P:P:P
