View Full Version : [SOLVED] Unity on 11.04. What are my options?
March 15th, 2012, 12:04 AM
I saw a thread on how to get back to the classic Gnome desktop in 11.10, so I tried that but it doesn't work. Someone told me to download "gnome=panel" but I can't find such a thing.
Do I need to reinstall 10.04? Or is it easier to go to 11.10 and use "sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback"? Or is there a better option?

Well you can always try one of the Ubuntu derivatives:
Kubuntu - http://www.kubuntu.org/
Xubuntu - http://xubuntu.org/
Lubuntu - http://lubuntu.net/

In 11.04 you can select Ubuntu Classic during login and in 11.10 you would need to install the Gnome Fall-Back Session . The thread title says 11.04.

I found this howto on how to make gnome 3 fallback look like the gnome2 on omgubuntu. Link: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/how-to-make-ubuntu-11-10-look-and-feel-like-gnome-2/
Also you should try out cinnamon if you want that classic gnome feel. It's made by the guys who make Linux Mint and I think its really good. Also if you get Cinnamon then you don't have to go through the process of tweaking the gnome fallback session. Link: http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/
This is of course if you have 11.10, but if you have 11.04 you can just switch to the gnome classic session.

Upgrade to 11.10 and install the gnome-shell desktop environment. You can then visit the Gnome Shell Extensions website to configure it to your liking:
Take a look at this video and see if Gnome Shell with extensions might be for you:

Frog's Hair - I just restarted but I didn't see any classic option. I also can't find the thread you're referring to.
Edit. Huh. Why was "hating" taken out of the title of the thread?

OH WAIT I FOUND IT! Down at the very bottom of the log in screen. From the pictures that were posted, I had the impression it was in the log in window. Thanks!

Why was "hating" taken out of the title of the thread?
Because it upsets me. And you won't like me when I am upset. :D
