Is there a way you can play PS2 games off the cd on ubuntu. I owna PS2 so it would be legal. My ps2 is screwed up and it's expensive to get it fixed so I figured I'll be cheaper this way.

AFAIK, emulating PS2 games you own is a legal gray area, so it might or not be illegal, depending on where you live.
Not to say that the PS2 emulation scene has not matured yet, i.e. there is no good emulator for PS2. The ones that you can find are buggy and emulate only a few games. I think you should either wait some years until the console will be completely emulated, either go and fix your PS2.

What he said ^

I've been tracking PS2 emulation for a while (I've always wanted to play GT4 but never owned a PS2), and its not really moving too fast. I know with some programs you can actually play demos and boot games, but to be honest PS2's are at a reasonable price now anyway :)

When the PS3 comes out (if it's not already available where you are) you'll be able to pick up a 2nd hand PS2 for peanuts.

The PS3 is bound to accelerate the performance of PS2 games, right?

Sorry to blow a hole in the PS3 ideals here but this is what i know

first off the PS3 much like the XBox 360 has exaggerated on specs and the so called next generation is nothing more than a buzz word

ok it is blue laser and has the remote pads (nicked off WII)
and ok it will have better gfx but this will not improve on ps2 games
much like the ps2 did nothing for ps1 games it is sony's way of making a console that will allow you to play your old games without cluttering up your room with 3 different consoles

as for emulators most of the ones i have tried are dire
and considering you can get a ps2 for £50 or less now it seems pointless
banging ur head against the emulator wall

like i said before im sorry if i have crushed any ones thoughts on this
but when it comes to new games consoles it is a good idear to
a) get the real specs 9 times out of 10 you will stumble across game developers moaning about the throttle point between the north bridge and south and how thy have to kane the gpu
b) wait about a month or so after release you can guarantee a price war

I have been watching the pcsx2 development quite closely as of late and they are really chugging along. Sadly, it hasn't been updated to linux as of late and it requires one hell of a cpu to really get full emulation. Hopefully you like FFX because that is their main testing game (but they do alot on quite a few other games), for reference it gets about 70-140 fps on a core 2 duo overclocked.

Support them if you can, as it is the only emulator that actually is working past the bios (almost version .9.2). And please, no bitching in their forums about a linux version! They lost their linux dev and it was almost the end of the project 6 months ago, so its a sore spot.
