I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 (installed from the LiveCD). I would now like to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10. I have the Ubuntu 11.10 LiveCD but, when I booted into it to upgrade, there was no option I could see to upgrade. Have I missed something?

You can't use the Live CD to upgrade, only the Alternate CD.

But if you have an internet connection you don't need a CD at all :)

Unfortunately, my 'Net connection is, and will only be, at the moment, with a mobile (cell) phone network dongle. My download speed varies wildly, usually hovering about 34 kb/s, and there is a download cap which I think is 500 MB (might be 3 GB -- there was a change to the former speed but there was a public outcry and the latter speed was reinstated but there were some terms and conditions and I'm not sure what my cap is) per month.

Is there no other way? If there are all the software upgrades on the 11.10 LiveCD, then it's all there; there must be a way to extract and install them, if only inconveniently manually. Do you think I would be able to get the Alternate CD from someone easily (I got the LiveCD off eBay)?

Unfortunately the Live CD's don't contain any installable packages.

It's the alternate CD or online upgrade only I'm afraid.

http://www.techdrivein.com/2011/04/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-1104-natty.html says you can upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 using the 11.04 LiveCD; why can't you upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 using the 11.10 LiveCD?

Another option would be to do a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10, without formatting the home partition.
