Since the installation of Ubuntu on my laptop Dell Latitude 620 I choose the USA Alternative International keyboard layout in order to use the Spanish accents ( á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ, etc), without the need to use the character map, I just type the apostrophe key + the letter. For some reason the apostrophe key doesn't work on this layout. I added the USA layout in order to type the apostrophe when writing in English.

I created a new temp user and the USA Alternative layout works fine. By the way when I checked the keyboard layout on the new user by default it has the USA Alternative layout.

Please need help since I write documents both in English and Spanish.

Choose "US International with Dead keys" OR "US International with AltGR (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AltGr_key) Dead Keys)

and you can have accents or special characters by hitting "right ALT" + letter.

For example for ñ = [right] Alt+n

Tried changing the keyboard to both layouts mention but still having the same problem. But if I change to another user the keyboard layout works fine. The thing I can't understand is why with my user the dead keys don't work and with a temp user I created everything works fine.
BTW: I'm also having problems with the onscreen keyboard (onboard) that with gnome applications it doesn't work, don't know if both problems are related.
