I have Ubuntu installed on a Dell GX270 (it's a work machine) and it autodetected the my CDRW, a SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-324F. I popped in a blank cdr and was able to burn cds using the Nautilus CD/DVD Creator.

Haven't tried ISOs though.
