View Full Version : [all variants] Myth/router/server Suggestions

First, I want to point out that I truly am an "Absolute Beginner" when it comes to Linux. I do however have a little bit of experience using Ubuntu server, an insatiable love for learning, time to invest in said learning, the ability to follow technical instructions, no deadline, and enough money to buy what I need (within reason).

What I want to do---

With as few hosts as possible, and preferably using lightweight software;

1. Serve files (backed up storage, either raid or rsynced to another server)
2. Run a Mythtv system for 2 LCD TV's, (one in the room where the machine doing the recording will be, one in the livingroom, accessible only by b/g/n wifi because of WAF).
3. Home network, wifi and wired, (untangle, pfsense, or the like)
4. Host a personal website

Available hardware on hand---

2 x ASUS E35M1-I & 4 x 2GB Memory
1 x Intel D525MW & 1 x 2GB Memory
1 x Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H & 4 x 1GB Memory - Phenom 3-core
1 x Biostar A740G M2+ & 1 x 1GB Memory - Athlon 64 X2
1 x 2TB HDD
2 x 1.5TB HDDs
3 x 1TB HDDs
2 x 750GB HDDs
1 x 500GB HDD
1 x 500GB 2.5" HDD
1 x 320GB 2.5" HDD
1 x TRENDnet 10/100/1000 PCI NIC
1 x Ceton InfiniTV PCIe cable quad-tuner card

1 x D-Link DIR-655 N Router
1 x Tp-link Tl-wa801nd Access Point
1 x ASUS RT-N10+ N Router
2 x 8-port Switches
1 x D-Link DWA 140 Wireless N USB Adapter
1 x D-Link DWA 142 Wireless N USB Adapter

Here is a diagram of what I am trying to do.

I am looking for suggestions and possibly how you would implement this setup. I would like to know which distro you would use for what, and how you would use that hardware, (and whatever other hardware I might need) to build the host machines, as well as what absolutely should be on a dedicated system. Once I know which distros and hardware to use, I am sure I can figure out how to set it up by googling.
