Yes you can easily do it!

Upgrade Ubuntu (http://[B]http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/upgrade)

I know the guide if for 11.04 to 11.1 but its the same principal. 10.10-->11.04-->11.10

I would just recommend installing 11.10 to start with

I followed the upgrade route from 9.04 or 9.10 (I can't remember where I started) with no problems. I wouldn't recommend upgrading to 12.04 until it is officially stable + 1 month. Just my experience. YMMV

Everyone has had different results from upgrading, but just backing up your files and doing a new install is far quicker than doing an upgrade. My last successful upgrade took about 2 hours to complete and I can install a new version from CD or USB in minutes.

With upgrading I keep most programs I added and don't need to go through that. It takes about the same amount of time either way until I have a usable version. With the upgrade process I feel I have less tweaking and hacking to do.

YMMV
