It's worth noting that the people who decide on things like this do not read the forums AT ALL.

Like the earlier post said, PLEASE read this first:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames

There is a certain way things will be done. A descriptor followed by an animal name. They will all be alphabetical from now on, but skip G as it has already been done.

There is a thread here, also discussing this exact same subject; I suggest you merge this one into here as well.

Of course, the Name the Ubuntu Release Game also apparently has a number of other rules (apart from Adjective/Animal alliteration). Firstly, we are (now) progressing forward through the English Alphabet (DEF, leave out G and H because they got done early, and now we go to 'i") and then we are becoming better as we progress. Additional, I think, the LTS release has a conservative, trust-inducing name (dapper) while the more experimental released are, well, edgy. If we are going to i after feisty and it is a LTS release, them I would suggest:

Immaculate Impala

if it is another "edgy" release then:

Insane Iguana

might be more appropriate.

By the way, I am making this all up (or at least bluffing my way through some half-remembered stuff from a while ago). But that's what I do for a living and I've not long ago got home from work. I'll be better soon.

Anyway:

Jumpy Jackrabbit

Killer Koala

Lovable Lamb and

Mysterious Mongoose

are already decided and at early draft specification stage (that's another lie, sorry.)

Anyway a leak from Ubuntu Central Command has it that Neural Numbat (Ubuntu 10.4) is scheduled to be first Ubuntu release compatible with Neural Plugs (a la The Matrix) and will feature a small prototype virtual world where our Avatars will mingle with the almost human residents in a tranquil but strangely disturbing version of England in the early 1930s (Just like New Zealand, really).

Anyway, that last bit's true. I'll go and have lie down now.

Close. Grumpy Groundhog was supposed to be the release after Hoary, but they decided against the name because it was too grumpy for a release that was supposed to be great (and breezy). It was then decided that Grumpy Groundhog will be the name of a cuting-edge repository that will not be affected by freezes and as such always provide new software (that can be broken, which will make the groundhog grumpy). It currently doesn't exist, likely because it would be too much work right now (and some of the backend stuff is apparently not in place). The is still a spec here: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/launchpad/+spec/grumpy-groundhog so we may well see it some day.

NEWS FLASH!!

The next version of *buntus name has been decided!!

IT'S Gutsy Gibbon

From Mark Shuttleworth:

Folks, allow me to introduce the Gutsy Gibbon, who will be succeeding
the Feisty Fawn as the focus of our development love in a few short
weeks, for release in October 2007.

The Gibbon won the G-race to be our engineering mascot for this next
release, but it was a close run. We very much wanted to honor the
tremendous contributions of the GNU project to Free Software by awarding
the role to the Glossy Gnu. This prompted an intense internal debate
about trademarks, at which both the Fiery Fox and the Icy Weasel were
heard. In the end, however, the judge, jury and elocutionary (that would
be me) took a liking to the Gibbon's extraordinary reach, and the Gibbon
won outright.

The Glossy Gnu will nonetheless play a role in this next release,
because Ubuntu 7.10 will feature a new flavor - as yet unnamed - which
takes an ultra-orthodox view of licensing: no firmware, drivers,
imagery, sounds, applications, or other content which do not include
full source materials and come with full rights of modification,
remixing and redistribution. There should be no more conservative home,
for those who demand a super-strict interpretation of the "free" in free
software. This work will be done in collaboration with the folks behind
Gnewsense.

Our Gutsy is an expert in brachiation, which is apt for a project that
needs to navigate a complicated forest of branches very quickly.

Some folks would say that any monkey can install Ubuntu (and sadly,
other folks would say that many have), but the Gibbon will take easy
installation to a whole new level, with work on an
unattended-installation infrastructure in Ubiquity that makes it trivial
to roll out Ubuntu desktops across an organization while getting on with
other, more complicated stuff such as Windows service pack installations
on legacy desktops.

While Ubuntu is by no means the 800-pound gorilla in the server game,
the Gibbon will show that lean and mean count for something! Agility of
deployment, together with integrated management will be a focus for the
Ubuntu server team. Gutsy will not be an LTS (Long Term Support)
release, but it will nonetheless see a lot of server work and be useful
for fast-moving server deployments.

On a personal note, the monkey on my back has been composite-by-default,
which I had hoped would happen in Edgy, then Feisty. I'm nervous to
predict it now for Gutsy, for fear of a third strike, but I'm told that
great work is being done in the Compiz/Beryl community and upstream in
X. There's a reasonable chance that Gutsy will deliver where those
others have not. I remain convinced that malleable, transparent and
extra-dimensional GUI's are a real opportunity for the free software
community to take a lead in the field of desktop innovation, and am keen
to see the underlying technologies land in Ubuntu, but we have to
balance that enthusiasm with the Technical Board's judgment of the
stability and maturity of those fundamental layers.

Of course, the real work of deciding Gutsy's goals will happen at
UDS-Sevilla, May 5-11 in the wonderful Andalucia, Spain. I hope many of
you will be joining us for some hard work and also, no doubt, a fair bit
of monkey business! As usual we will be running a semi-virtual summit,
open for participation by VoIP and real-time online editing of the
blueprints for Gutsy Gibbon. If you have items you want on the agenda,
please make sure they are in the Ubuntu blueprints list:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu

...and then also nominate them for discussion at UDS-Sevilla! Please
only do this if you intend to participate in the developer summit -
either in person or virtually - so that you can present your ideas and
collaborate with the other developers. The summit should be a great
combination of hard work planning Gutsy, presentations from cutting edge
upstreams on their own plans for this next six months, and some time in
the sun for R&R in the best tradition of the region. For those of you
who can't make it across the Atlantic, we hope to see you for Gutsy+1 at
UDS-Boston in the first week of November.

Now that the Fawn has found her legs, and is ready for her debut on
April 19th, we need to lay some foundations for Gutsy. In the next few
days we will open up a limited-upload target for Gutsy and start
uploading toolchain packages there. Our aim is to open Gutsy for general
upload on the same day that Feisty is released. Wherever you are, that
will be a day for celebration. Go ape!

Nah, the names are cool, and you get questions when you say 'oh, I run gutsy. and you?' - which makes you feel included (sorry...).
Hopefully the names will stay, but just different names. Gutsy is still 7.10. Ubuntu still has the traditional numbers, but if we can find an animal with a name that starts with Ω then great!

well see, you have an array of size 26 holding the alphabet. just use x % 26 and you'll get the remainder from modular division, and that'll tell which index of the array to use and hence which letter....so the 27th would be A just like 1 because 1 % 26 and 27 % 26 are both 1.

I know that each version of Ubuntu is named with two words that begin with the same alphabet (Edgy Eft, Festy Fawn, Gusty Gibbon...) so that the alphabet could be used to tell how new the version is. However, I am wondering how Ubuntu developers would name a new version after they run out of alphabets one day (e.g. after they have released, say, "Zealous Zebra").

After we run out of alphabets?

Or would you like to use all of the other alphabets that are available in the world today before we start over?

If so, maybe I should type slower.

I can see the next two releases for Ubuntu at

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

They are:

GutsyGibbon
HardyHeron

Where is the list of the other names for the releases? How are they created? Are they Voted on? Where can I get involved or find more info?

I don't want to know what they will be. I have bets with my wife on what the next one will be.
