A friend wants me to install Ubuntu for him. He has an older Pentium 4 with PC 133 RAM. The computer posts and it begins to boot from the CD drive but then the screen goes black. It doesn't get to the boot menu. I have tried the desktop live CD and the alternate CD. Both do the same thing. I am trying to install 10.04 LTS.

I ruled out the graphics card. There must be some incompatible component of the mainboard. It's an older board with 133mhz RAM.
I also tried putting the hard drive in a different computer. I was able to install Ubuntu onto it but when I put it back in its own computer it couldn't boot to GRUB, something about a file missing. I guess the next step in this method would be to download Super GRUB (http://www.supergrubdisk.org/).
----- Solved -----
The problem was a bad memory stick... easy fix... bad oversight...
