View Full Version : [ubuntu] Persistent IO error - I missed something important, I guess

On many medias and images, errno5 persist while trying to install.

At the moment, I've tried:

tried ubuntu 10.04 , 11.10 and Linux mint 12
tried with two different pen drives and a dvd

I was partitioning like
500mb ext4 on /boot
16gb swap
20GB /
200gb /home

the total hd size is 500

I now believe that either I missed something very stupid about installing a first OS on a pc or there is something wonr with the hardware. So I ask:

-it had windows before AND I was able to install ubuntu 11.10 (although probably on a different HDD region).

- I ran ubuntu 9.04 cd memtest86+ , I stoped on the 3th pass. It had found 1,7 million errors (???) but I identified the processor as an i7, while it is actually an i3 2100. What does it all mean? Did I do something wrong?

- fsck refuses to scan some partitions. Do you have to install
a specific filesystem for fsck to scan the partition it? What would be a good way of testing if the HDD is fine(other than self test)?

- I don't know anything about BIOS x UEFI. It might be the problem . How to diagnose if there is something wrong with it?

- It might be some configuration of the motherboard I have to channge?

- Are there 'safer' file systems ? Some which decrease the error probability?
