Is there something like notepad or gedit (not LibreOffice Writer) installed out of the box in Ubuntu 11.10? If so, where is it and how can it be run? If not, what should I do to get one? Thank you.

type "gedit" on the terminal, and it will show up.
Else, if you really, really want notepad in particular, it is installed by default when you install wine.

You can also click the Dash button and start typing gedit and it will show up for you to click on.

I went to "Dash home" and typed "gedit" (without quotes). It showed up in the dash. Thanks.
