One thing I learned to really like about Windows 7 was the Aero UI. Since using it, I've gotten a sort of love of transparent window themes. On Ubuntu, I'm using Gnome Shell with the Nords (http://0rax0.deviantart.com/art/GNOME-Shell-Nord-214295138) theme, as well as Docky to make my empty desktop look quite sexy, but as soon as I start a program, I feel like I'm mixing old style with new style.

Once you go Aero, you don't go back, I suppose. I don't care about the system resources I'm murdering, I just want it to look good.

So, any ideas for how to achieve my dreams? Any nice GTK and window themes that I can use?

Thanks in advance

If you want flashy effects, you are better off with compiz (i.e. Unity) or Kwin (i.e. KDE). Gnome-shell is rather new and it doesn't support a lot of effects yet. On the other hand, you can check compiz on YouTube to see how dull is Aero.

If you don't like Unity, there is a way to run Compiz on Ubuntu without Unity, but it may be a bit tricky.

For transperancy in Gnome-shell, here is what I found:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/83381/transparent-menusfor-applications-in-gnome-shell

transparency of the menus and panel is controlled by the shell theme you are using.

you can modify it by:

-selecting another theme that has transparency.
-modifying the current theme to have transparency. you can modify the theme (not recommended if you don't know what you are doing) by going to to the theme .css file.( you can find the .css file in the /home/username/.themes/theme you downloaded. or in the /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme

if you modify any file, please be carefull and make sure to back up the original.

my suggestion is to use another theme to your liking. such as elementaryviper luna. which is semi transparent.or the elegance theme.
