I just came across a software, Flux. Apparently they have a Linux version as well. Anyone using that thing or any other monitor calibration tool? Do these really work?

I used to calibrate my monitor, but haven't in a few years. It did make a big difference, and I assume it still does.

Will a monitor/screen callibration help with printing colors?

I have a printer that seems to add more red or yellow into the images, than what shows on the screen. So would that be a screen callibration, or a printer callibration?

I posted a thread a long time ago about colour calibration using free stuff. Ideally though you need a hardware device for colour calibration.

Will try and fin the thread and post back.

Edit: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=880636

Ideally you need something like a Color Spider etc which works in linux.

The ColorHug (http://www.hughsie.com/) looks interesting for calibrating monitors. Sadly it doesn't do printer calibration...but maybe it will someday.

Well, I guess if you get the screen calibrated, then it is a case of tweaking the printer to match it. At least one of the two would be in good shape.

I suppose it's fine if you only have one monitor. I have two different monitors, one LG and one Samsung and the images on them are completely different at default settings, the LG has a nasty green tint to it.

I've finally installed xfce 4.10 so today I will tackle the task of calibrating both displays as the difference annoys me. Not looking forward to this as it's a long tedious process if you don't have a hardware colorimeter.

You can even build your own with all this info https://banu.com/blog/41/interview-of-colorhug-maker-richard-hughes/

Just came across this http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/2009/03/23/monito-calibration-the-dispcalgui-way/

Looks interesting but I think you need a hardware sensor

I just use the manufacturer-supplied color profile for my monitor.

I purchased a Huey and used Dispcalgui+Argyllcms successfully.

Ditto. If I was into printing my photos, I'd buy the hardware and calibrate everything. (Would also need a better printer.) But, I don't print. Since I have no control over other people's monitors, I tweak my photos to make me happy.
