Hello,

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 and went straight ahead to install Gnome 3. I installed gnome-shell from the repos. I then logged out and back in (choosing Gnome as the desktop environment), but I got Gnome Classic instead.

Did I miss anything?

make sure you have appropriate graphics drivers installed and working. Gnome Shell requires hardware acceleration, without it you'll drop into the fallback mode.

I have a AMD Radeon 6490M and I installed the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. However, there's also another available driver, ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates), which fails on installation.
