I have a Lenovo PC 133 IDE HD that works fine with both the 3.0 and 2.6 standard shipping Ubuntu 11.10 kernels.

I move it into a box with an actual Intel branded motherboard and the boot hangs on 3.0 but does not hang on 2.6*

After completing the requisite round of foul language I though that I lacked understanding about part of the installl/build functions so I used the instructions to pull down and install 3.1.4 from here:
http://www.upubuntu.com/2011/11/how-to-install-kernel-31-on-ubuntu.html

The 3.1.4 kernel got installed, put into grub and it too does not boot.

So what did I do wrong and how can get the 3.X series of kernels to boot on the DDR memory containing machine?

(*and it is not the change in graphic cards - I can watch the death in the 'recovery' kernel choices, not to mention the DDR based box now works better under 2.6. )
