View Full Version : [ubuntu] Startup mounting problem

The other day my desktop (running Ubuntu 11.10) suddenly stopped working. I have no idea what started all this, but after some tinkering here is where I am:

I can now get through to the GRUB menu, and it starts loading, but it stops and says "An error occurred while mounting /mnt/sdb"
I can either skip or go to a manual recovery

skip causes a black screen with flickering, and eventually some messages
###Something cut off###
* Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ OK ]
* Starting MySQL Server [ OK ]
_

At this point I can reach a virtual terminal and go through my hard drive and do everything with no troubles, just no GUI

manual recovery drops me into a root terminal and it's the same story.

I used these terminals to backup (everyone: always keep backups, very important!) my work and tried to do a clean install, but I just got a very uninformative error message.

I have no idea where to go from here, if anyone could offer any advice, I would really appreciate it.

For anyone coming with the same problem: I'm sorry to say I never found a solution. I was able to get an external hard drive mounted to back up my information, and then reinstalled.
