Hi there,

Since I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on a SSD, I like to make sure that I'm keeping disk space down to a minimum. I was just wondering if it was possible to remove the Compiz-based Unity but just keep the 2D interface?

Thanks.

From what I understand no. If you was to uninstall one it would not matter disk space wise since they both use the same programs. Basically one is Compiz based and one is not.

Thought that was going to be the case. Thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks!

If you want to save your SSD disk space, and also reduce the r/w activity, you should consider the lighter, compiz-free (also pulse-free and somemore-free), alternatives of Ubuntu: LUbuntu and XUbuntu.

Also formatting the disk to a non journaled file system (as ext2) will reduce r/w activity. And I don't set any swap space in my SSD disks, for the same reason.

As for purely disk space, some maintenance on your side will help a lot: regulary remove old unused kernels, clean browser cache, etc

Cheers
