A friend of mine gave me an old Averatec 3500 laptop/tablet. When i try to install Ubuntu 11.04 via disk or usb on windows the installation goes as normal until the computer reboots, after it reboots the installer freezes and does not complete the installation. When i try to boot from either the usb or cd the same thing happens (it freezes). Any help would be appreciated.

According to the specs, you have only 512Mb RAM. That is not enough for Ubuntu.

If you wish to stay with the Ubuntu family, try Lubuntu (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu), designed for lower specification machines. If you are happy to move away from Ubuntu, there are a few other distros such as Bodhi Linux (http://bodhilinux.com/) and Crunchbang (http://crunchbanglinux.org/).
