View Full Version : Where Did Netbook Remix Go?

cbanakis

Canonical still has every Ubuntu release available for download.

Every release, except for Net-Book Remix that is.

I just downloaded an iso from the archives a few months ago.
ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso

And now it is nowhere???

Where did it go?

Is there a reason why Canonical would want to erase it from existence?
I thought 10.04 was an LTS release?

They decided it wasn't the way to go.

Click on the "alternative downloads" link and you get this page (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/alternative-download), which has a link to (among other things) the 10.04 netbook remix.

Ubuntu "Netbook Remix" no longer exists as a separate entity, because Unity is supposed to work equally well with desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet, etc. :)

Nope.

It looks like they just forgot to take the link down on that page.
It is a broken link.

It looks like snowpine, and JDShu are misunderstanding.

It is well known, that Canonical dropped Net-Book Remix for Unity in October of 2010.

But all traces and downloads for older versions of Ubuntu that were setup with Net Book Remix have all been recently removed.

You can still download Ubuntu 4.10 (Released October 2004), But Ubuntu 10.04 Net-Book-Remix (Released April 2010) is gone, along with every other version of Netbook-Remix (9.10, 9.04, etc)

Where did it go?
And why?

Indeed, the netbook iso has been removed, the torrent link (http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso.torrent) is still there, but is dead. That said, I honestly fail to see why you'd want it. Do you like installing tons of updates?
Just get the 32bit 10.04.4 desktop iso and then install the 'ubuntu-netbook-remix' package, logout, and select the netbook session.

Well, I still have the iso on my server.

I'm not posting because I want to download it.

Just strange how all traces of all versions of NBR were recently purged from existence.

Wondering if anyone knows why?

One possible explanation is that the 10.04 netbook ISO was never updated, and what's the point of keeping an old image, when new ones are available?

PS: I hope the ISO you have is not from thepiratebay.com.

Nope.

It is a broken link.

Which could just be a mistake. Send a quick email to webmaster@ubuntu.com, if they're no longer hosting the image they shouldn't have the link up, but it might just need the link to be fixed.

There is no longer a separate netbook remix of recent versions, but AFAIK 10.04's netbook remix should be supported for the same period as the desktop version.

snowpine
February 27th, 2012, 09:49 PM
Actually I think that only Ubuntu proper is "long term support" and not its derivatives like Netbook. (But I could be wrong.)

I bet the torrent is still being seeded for anyone who needs a copy.

Highly likely, but that still relies on getting the .torrent from a trusted source.

You guys still not understanding.

Netbook remix was introduced in 8.04 (I Believe)
And all traces are gone. (not just 10.04)

Every release is still available.
8.04 32bit Desktop
8.04 64bit Desktop
8.04 32bit Server
8.04 64bit Server
8.10 **
9.04 **
Etc
Etc

Every distribution of Ubuntu that was EVER released, is still available.

All except for EVERY single distribution that was set up with the Net-Book-Launcher.

This had to have been done intentionally.

And I am just wondering why?

snowpine
February 27th, 2012, 09:59 PM
Do Canonical's decisions EVER make sense, really?

(just kidding :D)

My badd.

If someone can give me write access to Canonical's server, I will put the iso back when I get home from work.

Sorry everybody.

LOL

forrestcupp

If it was really intentional, they're probably really trying hard to bury it to promote Unity. It wouldn't surprise me, since they're doing things like taking away the only paid Kubuntu dev to put complete focus on Unity.

It is pretty weird that they've gone to that extent, though.

cbanakis

Makes sense, but were still just guessing.

Theres gotta be someone here that actually knows for a fact, what the story is.

snowpine

I found it here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS):

The LTS designation applies only to specific subsets of the Ubuntu archive. The LTS may not apply to all editions and remixes of Ubuntu. For example... In 10.04, the Netbook Edition was not an LTS.

This makes 10.04 netbook "end of life" since Oct. 2011. At that point it should have been moved to http://old-releases.ubuntu.com (but I don't see it there).

cbanakis
February 27th, 2012, 11:03 PM
The whole "LTS" thing is irrelevant though.
There are way more non-LTS releases than there are netbook releases.

But all the non-LTS releases are still available.

snowpine

I understand, just pointing out that the mystery is not "why isn't netbook remix mentioned on ubuntu.com?" (because this is the normal procedure for "end of life" releases) but rather "why hasn't it shown up yet on old-releases.ubuntu.com?" :)

cbanakis
February 27th, 2012, 11:24 PM
It was on old-releases.ubuntu.com
But now its not.

So it was removed

or are you just confused?

As a daily Netbook user, I am on it now, I have to say that Lubuntu is way better on a Netbook than any of the other Ubuntu releases. So NBR is gone, frankly it sucked.

Answers.launchpad.net, may be able to tell you what happened to the netbook remix, though there isn't a need for a separate iso any more, as it has been rolled into the desktop iso.

your thinking of netbook remix 10.10, which is actually Unity.

The original Net Book Launcher is not available in any distro, it was available as a separate package, but I think thats gone too.

All distros containing the netbook launcher spanning across 5 years have been erased from existence, but every other distro, including ones even older than the first appearance of the netbook launcher, are still available.

So strange...

Ok. I decided to actually go look for myself, and I don't know what you're talking about. Right here they still have the netbook images (http://mirror01.th.ifl.net/releases/10.04/) listed right along with everything else for Ubuntu 10.04.

cbanakis
March 2nd, 2012, 08:03 PM
I guess they put it back?

It was absolutely nowhere to be found for at least 2 weeks.

Maybe they put it back because of this thread?

LOL

I guess that solves this then.

Just out of curiosity, I am downloading, to see if something was changed.

Maybe it has Unity now?

lol

Is ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso the file you're downloading? Post its sha256sum when you're done, and I'll compare it with the copy I downloaded in Dec. 2010. :)

Dunno - I mean: Canonical can do as they wish... their site, their call, but I still find it odd that not only don't they provide links to the netbook remix but that it really seems like they're saying (for netbooks) it's Unity or nothing.
I thought Linux was about choice? (even within a distro)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds Unity awkward to use.

Thats 10.10, which is NOT Netbook Remix.
It is in fact, the first appearance of Unity.

I have a netbook - a really, really old netbook (EeePC 701 ring any bells?) and I found netbook releases to be really horrid.

I don't use the EeePC often now; but I've got Lubuntu on it, and it is sweet as sweeties.

Lubuntu FTW! NBR FTTC (For the Trash Can)! Canonical did their Soviet-style removal of all NBRs from archives because it made Stalin look bad or something.

Oh. Sorry. At least there's still the mirror. I'd say if someone doesn't know about it, they won't care. And if someone does know about it and want it, they're going to find it, anyway.

As others have stated the main edition now uses Unity, so there is no need. What we do need is a desktop edition now :P.

cbanakis
March 7th, 2012, 07:17 PM
How did you find that mirror anyway?

I searched and searched when I noticed it was no longer on the main page.

And all I could find is links on softpedia and want not, and they were all broken, cause they pointed to the originals on Ubuntus website.

I'm pretty sure it was just a light hearted joking remark.

I find it hard to believe anyone would take offense to that.
