Hi,

Reading from another thread, it was mentioned, installing with the Alternate CD installer (d-i), with either xubuntu-desktop system (http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric-updates/xubuntu-desktop) or the xfce desktop meta-package (http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/xfce4).

!. Do both download and install workable systems, equally well?

2. Can apps and libs that are chosen to be downloaded, be installed in each equally well.

3. Will the core-ubuntu libraries, work equally well with each?

4. Is there an advantage/disadvantage using one, over the other?

5. Would either stand out as being more of a "pristine" Xfce DE install?

Just more, for me to think about before my move to Xubuntu 12.x!

Thanks.

xubuntu-desktop will give you a fully-functional Xubuntu identical to if you installed from the Xubuntu CD.

xfce4 will give you a stripped-down, "vanilla" Xfce without the Xubuntu settings and artwork.

If you don't know which you like, then I recommend burning a Xubuntu Live CD and taking it for a test drive. :)

hmm... I guess, I will have to try the (d-i) install with the Xfce desktop meta-package, to compare.

As it will be on a new disk, with my "stuff" on another, if I mess it up, (which, I am prone, to do), no loss. It does appeal to my sense of simplicity, though.

How do you like "vanilla" XFce desktops, over distros' ones?

If you like Xubuntu 12.04 Alpha then go for it, this is not an operating system I would personally consider stable for everyday use.

You mean the Alpha, I assume.

My plan is to to with probably 12.10, after it is mature, just before EOL of Lucid. By then Xfce 4.10 will be out, and Thunar will be drawing the desktop.

Is it hard to set up the "vanilla install" to a good working one? Sure, what is "good", I know. But, is it doable for a recent convert, from being hand-held with Gnome2 in Ubuntu?

By "vanilla xfce" I mean this (http://www.xfce.org/about/screenshots) instead of the Xubuntu-specific settings, config, and artwork.

Xfce as you know is infinitely customizable as demonstrated here (http://xfce-look.org/).

Yes, I have looked lovingly at those many times. I guess, I'll have to try them.

Thanks, for the conversation/advice.

Take Care!
