Could you tell us a little more about your laptop's hardware? (CPU, RAM, GPU, etc).

Regards.

It's totally up to you: whatever you feel most comfortable with!
Start off with ubuntu as it is, play around with it and get a feeling for it; then you can always get another window manager such as lxde or xfce.
On my part, I got tired of Unity and switched to xfce, which is mor lightweight, albeit a little less "shiny". Simply by going

$ sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

I guess its the same with lubuntu (use lubuntu-desktop instead (please confirm, can't check atm)). Then you can choose, on startup, which WM to use just by clicking on the cogwheel-icon. Just google for "linux window manager" and you'll be spoilt for choice.

But your machine will cope with any of the available options, if that's what your afraid of.

Ubuntu Desktop Edition 64bits will run perfectly on that hardware. I would recommend it.

Just my thoughts.

You can download Ubuntu from here (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download). The page also gives instructions for trying it and installing it.
