Not really an ubuntu question, but I couldn't think of a better community to ask.

One of the organizations I work with has a decade of historical documents. I need to scan them and organize them.

I've seen this neat desk / neat receipts product out there but it's software doesn't get great reviews. Any suggestions?

I've been playing with the idea of Alfresco but I'm not sure that's the best way to go. Manually importing each scan doesn't seem all that smart.

I've hooked up a few scanners and most work with no additional drivers.
Just scan the stuff to PDF, name the file what the piece of paper is, and place it into a folder. Best idea is to put it all on a external hard drive that can be stored in a fireproof safe.

The problem is that we're in the thousands of docs. We need something to be able to search and find stuff....

Here's a couple (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/12/diy-book-scanner/) of web sites that talk about (http://www.diybookscanner.org/) do-it-yourself book scanning. There's probably a good chance it wouldn't work with Ubuntu, though.

I haven't used this program yet (it's been on my "to try" list for a while), but it's supposed to generate searchable scans in PDF format: http://gscan2pdf.sourceforge.net/

Depending on the type of scanner you are going to use, some high-end document management systems can also produce searchable scans.
