Data loss after Upgrade

Hello All,
I recently upgraded my Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.10 but to my amazement, all my previous data have disappeared whereas, all my previous bookmarks are still available in my browser.

Does anyone know how i can possibly recover my data?

no problem, just restore them from backup

But, you did just upgrade online, nothing else?
The home seems to be still present as, the firefox data are also stored there.

What else is missing? Is the Thunderbird still working?
Are there settings like desktop color still same as before?
