Hello All,

I'm not new to running Linux (of any kind), but I do like to check and get input before I install it, particularly with it possibly going on my main computer.

I use a Dell Inspiron 9100 which is getting to be an older computer, however it's fine for what I do and I couldn't afford a new computer even if I wanted one.

My 9100 has:

2.80Ghz HT P4 Prescott
1GB DDR Ram (soon to be upped to the max 2GB)
128MB ATI Radeon 9700
D-Link DWL-G630 (I know this works with Ubuntu)
60 GB HD
SigmaTel C-Major Audio something or other

I'm most concerned about the Radeon 9700 and how it will work under Ubuntu/other Linux distros but I'm also wondering what the support for Hyper threading is like.

I'm happy with it's more then acceptable performance under XP, but XP is growing long in the tooth and due to compatibility the SigmaTel sound simply won't work right with Windows 7.

I fully expect to lose some performance going from an 11 year old OS to a recent one but how much will I notice a loss if I do at all?

I don't like the new Ubuntu unity so I'm also wondering what my options are there.

I think if I do this I'll do a dualboot system.

Any input or ideas?

Thanks. :)
