you would think this would be easy but it's not. All I want is shortcuts. Is there a better way other than using the gnome edit? That's a pain and what if I don't know the path to the program? Why can't I right click and add to desktop LOL???

Are you using Unity or Gnome Shell?

Edit:

It doesn't matter. Go to the Ubuntu Software Center and install Advanced Settings. In the Desktop area, turn on the setting for the desktop to be handled by the file manager. Then you'll be able to put things on your desktop. You can open up Nautilus, right click on anything and choose to Copy to the desktop, or you can right click on the desktop.

If you are using Unity, all you need to do is drag&drop programs from the Dash menu to your desktop... ;)

(And if the program isn't in Dash yet, use the Main Menu tool to add it there.)

Properties > permissions
and tick the execute box.

Right click on the file after you have added it to the desktop.
