I am trying to set up dual monitors for Ubuntu 11.10. I have an AMD 6850 video card. When I run "sudo aticonfig --initial=dual-head" and reboot I get the desired desktop, but I loose transparency for the desktop (not just Unity). By default I just have mirrored monitors, which I do not want. How do I restore the transparency when I have a desktop spanning two monitors?

This is probably a stupid question, but can you configure the monitor settings from within an active session? I know that the configuration process depends heavily on the video card in question, but do you have a Monitors item in System Settings?

If I try configuring in Displays, by unchecking "Mirror displays", I get the following:

The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(3840, 1080), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1920, 1920)
