I was on a page trying to figure out how to get the spell checker working in Firefox, and thought this comment was kind of humorous.

The firefox dictionary plugin really does come in handy, but if your solely reallying on it, time to go back to school

And then this reply immediately after it

Reallying? I think it’s time you started relying on spell check more! :)

Not to mention the use of "your" instead of "you're".

Incidentally, I found out that Firefox doesn't come with a dictionary anymore and you have to install an extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/).

So how is it spell-checking then? Is Ubuntu providing the dictionary? I know that I haven't installed any extension for the purpose but I see the red squiggles when Firefox 11 (beta) doesn't like something.

Wait, there is a dictionary plugin for Firefox?

I have always used the built-in spellchecker and I am on FF10 atm.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10, and my Firefox was set to automatically spell check, yet I wasn't getting the red squiggly lines. I found out it was because for some reason, I didn't have a dictionary installed. So I installed the extension, and it started working.

I have no idea why it didn't have it installed. The only thing I can figure from my research is that the later versions of Firefox don't include a dictionary, but if you've had Firefox installed since the earlier versions, the dictionary carries over. I just did a clean install, so I wouldn't have had any dictionaries that carried over.

Sounds reasonable but let's see if we can get some confirmatory links. I'll look around ...

This site (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Using%20the%20spell%20checker) has this:
Not all locales come with a dictionary installed due to licensing reasons. !!!

One of the authors of the article, Chris Ilias, helps people over here: http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox/topics?hl=en&gvc=2&pli=1

You could consider asking if you have a (much hated) Google account or via a news reader?

Interesting. Thanks!

There is a thread about the Firefox spell-checker in the Precise Testing & Discussion thread:

I read through that whole thread, and nobody found out what vasa1 and I found out.

But anyway, I already got my spell check working. The original point of this thread was that I thought the comment that one guy made was pretty funny.

A couple of mods here (http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2428379&p=11740331#p11740331) suggest it is language-related due to licensing reasons.

I actually found out from the other thread that my dictionary was installed, and it just wasn't selected. Since I installed the dictionary, I now have two "English/United States" dictionaries in the list.
