Fresh Install of Ubuntu

Hello,
I have Windows 7 and would like to start with Ubuntu and related publishing programs.
I have the Ubuntu 10.04.3 CD. If I do a fresh install, will I loose all the paid for programs that now live on my desk top. Will I be able to download from a stick drive, my MS Office texts into Libre and other open source programs?

When you say paid programs, you mean programs or documents?
Almost none windows programs will run on ubuntu.

But if you refer to Office documents, yes, both Libre Office and Open Office can open them. If you have any features that are MS specific, it might not open 100% correct in Libre/Open, but otherwise all "basic" documents will work just fine.
