MITx will offer a portfolio of MIT courses for free to a virtual community of learners around the world. It will also enhance the educational experience of its on-campus students, offering them online tools that supplement and enrich their classroom and laboratory experiences.

The first MITx course, 6.002x (Circuits and Electronics), will be launched in an experimental prototype form. Watch this space for further upcoming courses, which will become available in Fall 2012.

So a lot of you are already aware of the MIT - Courseware that can be utilized for free. Now MIT is going beyond that offering classes and certificates for students that partake and demonstrate understanding. Sure, it isn't a diploma or degree but can be something handy for the future non the less (and you get to learn stuff :p)

Institutionalized education teaches, among other things, a kind of learned helplessness that ironically undermines self-education. This sort of thing allows an individual to engage in structured learning in a way that is not dependent upon the institution. There are obviously tons of resources on the internet to do this but hats off to MIT for creating an initiative that enables people to continue learning.
