I think my laptop keeps over heating

Being summer and all my laptop has been randomly turning off. And it's not just mine all my housemates are suffering too. It's really hot to touch a lot of the time. Is there any ways i can reduce the heat build up?

i have a Targus CoolMat under my laptop which overheats all the time (HP zd7180us, p4 3.2, way too powerful for a laptop). i think i wore out the fans in this CoolMat because its overheating more now even with the fans on.

if you dont want to spend the money on that, just take 4 things of equal thickness and stick them under hte corners of your laptop. a deck of cards under each corner might cut the heat down a bit, or something about that thick.
