Hi! I'm not sure I understand you correctly. I removed Firefox and installed Chromium using the Software Centre. Synaptic Package Manager works on pre-11.04 versions of Ubuntu.

You type "Chromium" into the search box and then select "install".

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on these command line instructions:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

if you're looking for good download managers .
i vote for Fatrat and Kget .

Ubuntu internally have one download manager named as "wget"
you can use it as in terminal

wget <you link here>

hope that helps .

Chromium (the one you find by ubuntu software center) is old, and has lesser features (does not support many chrome web store apps as well).
Better download from https://www.google.com/chrome
