A colleague has a Toshiba Satellite SA40-702 laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 installed.

At home he has no available fixed broadband connection and wants to use a 3Mobile Huawei E585 dongle to access mobile internet.

We can get the ethernet connection working just fine, but are struggling to get the E585 working, or the wifi adapter in his laptop connected to the 802.11b access point at work.

So apologies for the possibly obvious questions that follow, I'm not too experienced with Linux I'm afraid:

1) How can I get the internal wifi hardware to work with Ubuntu?

2) Does anyone know if the E585 communicates with the laptop through the USB cable or via wifi? Either way, we have followed all advice we can find to make this dongle work, all without success - any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We know that the dongle works since it functions correctly with a Windows machine from the same location. We also know that the wifi connection at work is Ok, again because other machines are successfully using it (SSID and key double checked).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance
