Apple will be hoping to get royalties from both Android and Microsoft:

It looks like Microsoft are going to have a set back on android patents though :)

Looks like Apple will be giving 2.25% of every Iphone sale to Google, (Motorola).

It doesn't look like MS will be extorting Android much longer either:

Paying Royalties to use Patented technology is the correct way to do things.

Feel free to waste your money supporting companies which are feeling unable to challenge in competition and troll all over business deliver innovation.

YOUR money only please, not mine nor everyone else.

Paying Royalties to use Patented technology is the correct way to do things.

The only issue is when companies patent dubious things (most software patents IMO fall into this category), and then try to extort money from their competition (or attempt to get their products banned from the marketplace.

But yes, ideally, patents are good. In practice, not necessarily.

That may be so, but the patent system as we have it now is a joke and people can patent anything..

Its a BIG JOKE.

I used to have a vague interest in the ludicrous circus that is the patent world, but those days are long gone.

a wants x of b's y.
b wants z of c's q.
d feels left out and sues a.
a sues d.

As a consumer, it makes little difference to me; they've made their bed, and they're big enough to lie in it.

I hope no one renews the MP3 patent as such. It ends in 2018. No doubt Apple and Microsoft will try to jump on it ASAP. This would keep Linux from being able to have MP3 support in America by default for legal reasons. Unless we get an open-source clean-room reverse engineered alternative to playing them.

There's only a way for someone to waste his money: being unaware of it.

My Android came from Sony: it's Android and not a ¢ went in Microsoft pocket. Not the same thing for Samsung.

The best reply for the market is to ignore buy Android devices where Hardware manufacturer has such funny "agreement"

If patents weren't ridiculous, I would agree that people should pay royalties on them. Software patents these days are ridiculous, though.

Please listen to this podcast (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/441/when-patents-attack) and read this article (http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/10/tech/web/jury-strikes-down-claim-own-web/), and then tell me all patents should be respected.

Software patents are questionable, but patents in general are a good idea. They protect the little guys with good ideas, and give them a chance to take on and beat the big boys.

There seems to be a huge difference in attitudes to software patents around the world. It has to be said, the problem is largely the US.

Enjoy your freedom of being freely forced to pay update after update. I've nothing against your belief (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublethink)

The real problem aren't really the companies that use patent jokes to fire over other companies. The problem are people choices. If people stop buy crippled technologies like iPxxx's... Apple would had less time investing in lawsuit and, probably, investing people money (the one's who buy Apple stuff) in real innovation and probably they will focus only on real patent infringement (instead fire massive FUD bombing to the "all around").

Both Apple and Microsoft know only one way of doing business: monopolistic way. Google in it's way it's a monopolistic business, but the project Android itself is opensource... good things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aakash_(tablet)) and options (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod) come from it anyway. Apple, Microsoft and even Google are willing or not.

I don't pay for updates. I Pay for new releases.

People buy Apple and Microsoft through choice and freedom to choose, just like those who chose to use Linux.
