I am transitioning from using Ubuntu 11.10 occasionally to permanently. I've been looking for some software and hope others can also help me with their suggestions. Here are some Windows software that I've found Ubuntu/open-source counterparts.

1. Dreamweaver - Aptana
2. YM - Pidgin
3. Notepad++ - Geany

Here are other's that I've installed also:
1. gpicview
2. VLC
3. Advanced Settings
4. Synaptic
5. Ubuntu restricted extras

For some of the software I don't have, I will be using WINE. I haven't installed it yet cos it keeps asking me for the CD which I lost. In any case, is there anything vital that I need to install to make my Ubuntu complete? Thank you for your suggestions.

Open software sources - search in dash, or run it from the software centre - once you have software sources open - remove the cd from the list and then reload. It'll not ask for the cd again.

Any other software you guys think I might need on my system?

That is unfortunately akin to asking how long a piece of string is ...

I'd say clementine - someone will say NO !!! not that :)

I'd say xchat - someone will say NO !!! not that :)

I understand that it does seem too broad. I'll mark this as solved and start a new thread when I have a specific concern. Thank you.
