View Full Version : [ubuntu] Problems after upgrading

Yes I have some questions to ask, but first I need to vent.

I just upgraded from 10.x to 11.10.
What in the world happened to this distribution? Unity is what happens when intelligent people lock themselves in a room for too long.

So the solution for a difficult-to-configure interface is to make it an impossible-to-adjust interface?

No, really. I swear whoever is the technical lead for this distro should poke the head out of whatever echo chamber s/he's in and read what happened to Netflix and the long list of companies that royally messed up a promising product by having their own minions review their ideas...or worse.

Now, someone please tell me how the heck I can hide the launchbar that covers over the lefthand of my applications.

Also, why am I able to add some applications to the launcher but not others? How does one add an app when right-clicking on the launcher icon while the app is running does not reveal an "add to launcher" option?

UNITY IS ALL-AROUND FUNCTIONAL UBERFAIL. The beginning of the end. Wait, maybe that's too harsh...FUBAR may be better adjective.

Before you get all carried away. ;)

Might I suggest you download and test either (or all) Xubuntu (http://xubuntu.org/), Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/) or Lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/) before investing to much time with 11.10. These versions will reflect more of the OS your accustomed to.

Based on your statements, I doubt you will be satisfied with the new releases of Ubuntu - as Unity is here to stay. You can also review the many posts associated with Unity here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1884970).

What ever you decide - Good Luck.

I am very new to Ubuntu as a full time OS and I could not get used to Unity. Almost gave up and went back to Windows. However, I found Xubuntu and I have not looked back. Give it a shot. You just might like it.

Not exactly sure why you upgraded. 10.04 LTS is supported until April 2013 and my motto: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Was there any particular reason?

I need my computers stable and reliable and therefore stick to the LTS releases (but play with the others on other partitions).

PS: I don't like Unity either, but I have used Xfce for ages now so the change in desktop environments doesn't affect me. You could just install Xfce4 from Synaptics or Software Centre, log out, choose 'Xfce Session' from the 'Sessions' pop-up menu and give that a whirl. Many have/are. This DOES NOT install Xubuntu-desktop and associated apps and packages, only the xfce desktop environment. Mind you, nothing wrong with Xubuntu and just install whatever Ubuntu packages you need in that (not that you will need many). It is faster and, for me at least, lots better than Unity or Gnome for that matter. ;)

Hi mic dot, people can probably help with these issues
massive video problems, specifically in compiz, among other things, i hope these problems are fixed, and i will have no problem using. if you state the exact problems you are having and the ubuntu version and hardware specs.
Thanks

Feel free to discuss Unity (using a more moderate wording) here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1884970
after reading first post thoroughly OR to ask a support question, but not both in the same thread.

Closed.
