Dear Ubuntu community,

I have a problem with "file permissions" on Ubuntu 11.10.
I need to use a software on my external USB driver. Before the upgrade I was able to make "executable" the software on external devices but as I upgraded it does not work anymore.
My software has:
-rw-r--r-- permissions
That is, I was used to do:
chmod +x fielname
Now it does not add permission to the file. I have also tried as superuser but it is the same.

Do you know something more?

Thanks a lot

How is the external drive formatted? If it is fat32 or ntfs you can not set file permissions as the windows filesystems do not understand such things. The permissions will need to be set on the folder that the drive is mounted at, eg /media/mountfolder.

not quite, fat32 has no permissions at all so no permissions can be set, but now linux can handle ntfs permissions too.

Could it be that on the host system a program called usbmount is installed?
If yes, try to remove it and try again.
