No Logon Screen

I am not getting the logon screen after updating my ubuntu 10.04,
what i am able to do is just alt+ctrl+f2 ,i tried to reinstall gdm
after installation
gdm shows error saying
** (gdm-binary:1687): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager

** (gdm-binary:1687): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out

later on logon screen displays purple screen and ubuntu logo but no user lists.

Did you upgrade just some packages or the full os?
